The story of Palm Beach golf has always been written by legends and champions. Yet, few country clubs embody that history like BallenIsles. From its earliest days as PGA National to the tournaments and players who left their mark on its fairways, the Club reflects decades of the game’s evolution. To walk these courses is to trace a legacy that continues to shape how golf is remembered — and how it’s played today.
A Trio of Championship Greens
BallenIsles’ three championship courses each boast its own history and personality. The East Course, designed by Dick Wilson and Joe Lee in 1963, remains the crown jewel, with thirteen holes still playing as they did six decades ago. The North Course, added in 1969 by the same architects, winds through Florida landscapes with narrow corridors and strategic doglegs that demand precision. The South Course, completed in 1974 by Rees Jones, offers wider fairways and a layout that rewards creativity, making it a favorite for players of every level.
The Original Palm Beach Golf Stage
Long before BallenIsles became a private club, the East Course was a proving ground for the game’s greats. In the 1960s and early 1970s, when it was known as PGA National, the Club hosted the PGA Seniors’ Championship for nearly a decade. It also served as the original site of the PGA TOUR Qualifying School and home to the PGA Merchandise Show for nearly ten years. Legends like Sam Snead, Julius Boros, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer all tested their games on fairways that still carry the echoes of their swings.

1971 – A Year that Made History
Perhaps most iconic in BallenIsles history is the year 1971, when it hosted four major championships. The season began with the PGA Seniors’ Championship in January, drawing some of the game’s most celebrated names back to the spotlight. Just weeks later, the East Course staged the PGA Championship — the first major ever played in Florida — where Jack Nicklaus clinched the title with a steady par on the final hole. That fall, the East Course welcomed the PGA TOUR Qualifying School and then the World Cup of Golf, which brought players from 46 nations. For one club to host all these events in a single year was unprecedented, and it cemented BallenIsles’ place in golf history.

Where Championship Legacy Lives On
For more than half a century, the three regulation par-72 courses at BallenIsles have been central to the game’s story. But they’ve never stood still. Each course has been carefully renovated in the last decade, blending the strategy and character of classic design with innovations that reflect how golf is played today. In 2023, the East Course was reimagined by Nicklaus Design in honor of Jack Nicklaus’s 1971 win, keeping its iconic routing intact while enhancing the challenge for modern players. The North Course, redesigned by Kipp Schulties in 2013, threads its fairways through lakes and preserves, demanding accuracy while rewarding players with scenic vistas. The South Course, updated by Rees Jones in 2020, offers a fair but strategic layout where careful shot placement makes all the difference. Beyond the courses themselves, BallenIsles continues to look ahead with its Golf Learning Center. Innovative hitting bays, a Demo and Fitting Studio, and the latest technologies give players new ways to sharpen their game.
